    A Web-based Database System for Providing Technical Information on ATM Networking Platforms

    This paper presents a Web-based database hosting technical information about pioneering ATM networking platforms, associated research activities engaging these platforms, and related important trials conducted in the framework of these research activities. The paper outlines the organisation and structure of the information content in the database and discusses methods of access through the WWW interface. Besides the “static” information offered by the database, other Java-based tools provide for the on-line monitoring of the status of the ATM platforms and for manipulating data arising from technological trials on these platforms.     This paper describes an intelligent communication and decision support system for providing wireless services in an airport environment. A novel agent-based business model is proposed and the value chain is analysed for wireless applications. This system is studied and developed within the scope of the IST ADAMANT project, where the Athens International Airport (AIA) is used as the trial environment. First of all, a set of advanced, realistic decision support application scenarios enhancing the airport facilities both for the passengers and for the airport staff is identified. Most of the applications can be summarised as location-based personalised services. They refer both to airport internal users and to passenger users. In order to provide these services, location-sensitive service level agreements (SLAs) and radio resource management (RRM) are introduced. The design of such a system is envisaged based on a generic, multi-agent architecture, which is also presented in this paper

    Future Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) will be ubiquitous, large-scale networks interconnected with the existing IP infrastructure. Autonomic functionalities have to be designed in order to reduce the complexity of their operation and management, and support the dissemination of knowledge within a WSN. In this paper a novel protocol for energy efficient deployment, clustering and routing in WSNs is proposed that focuses on the incorporation of autonomic functionalities in the existing approaches. The design of the protocol facilitates the design of innovative applications and services that are based on overlay topologies created through cooperation among the sensor nodes

    An approach to Network control and Resource Management based on Intelligent Agents

    Network Control is currently carried out mainly by means of signalling protocols. Although these protocols are robust and facilitate standardisation, they present several drawbacks such as the inability of the Service Providers to adapt network resource control to the particular needs of their services, or the difficulty in deploying advanced traffic control schemes in order to achieve increased utilisation. An open distributed software architecture for Network Control based on concepts such as Intelligent Agents can be a solution to this problem. This paper highlights the major issues of this problem and presents the architecture and implementation of a system that enables open and flexible network control and resource management using intelligent agents. The description of the architecture is complemented by early experimental results as well as an implementation framework for deploying open programmable control capabilities in existing networks.     An open framework for prototyping the delivery of multimedia-rich virtual learning experiences through the Internet

    Incorporating interactive multimedia, VRML, and real-time video and audio conferencing into a multi-user, object-oriented framework to create a collaborative virtual learning environment is one scenario for killer applications towards emerging telecommunication infrastructures, such as the Internet 2 or the current Internet enhanced with QoS mechanisms. In this paper such an open framework for enabling rapid prototyping and delivery of virtual learning experiences through the Internet is presented. Towards this end cultural heritage content is exploited. VRML and Java are the key technologies. Based on this framework, the Enigma application is presented which enables groups of users to monitor multimedia-rich virtual guided tour sessions inside 3D representations of archaeological sites. A live guide controls these sessions so that all users have the same view of the content. Directions for further research based on the conducted work are presented
